Our mission is to support Afghan residents in Maine by addressing their basic needs, such as food, clothing, and transportation, while promoting the preservation of Afghan culture and fostering integration into a culturally diverse community. By doing so, we aim to improve their quality of life and create a sense of belonging.

Our organization’s story reflects the journey of Afghan refugees to the United States, spanning several decades. It began with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s, which forced millions to flee their homes, and continued through the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, which triggered a significant exodus as Afghans sought refuge from the Taliban takeover. In response to this recent crisis, the U.S. government initiated a refugee admissions program, aiming to resettle up to 50,000 Afghans who assisted the U.S. or were at risk.

Today, we serve approximately 600 Afghan individuals in Maine, most of whom are of low-to-moderate income and face challenges like limited English proficiency. These barriers make it difficult for them to navigate American life. Our goal is to provide the resources and support necessary for them to overcome these challenges and build successful, fulfilling lives. From offering food and clothing to assisting with translation, transportation, employment, and after-school activities for children, we strive to be a helping hand throughout their journey and foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.
